This article aims to scrutinize the symbolism of the novel Los de abajo by Mariano Azuela. The studies of G. Bachelard and E. Cirlot, among other authors, serve as a reference for the methodological framework.
In Los de abajo, revolutionary chaos destructively breaks into the dominant world; however, in the underworld, the victors are defeated, Demetrio Macías, the God-man dies (regression), and the myth affirms the non-transformation of the armed struggle. The symbolism of the novel reveals higher truths: the infinite cruelty, madness and chaos of humanity. Rather, in the narrated world, the poetics of love emerge with passionate splendor like that of the revolution itself, and the lyrical merges with the epic in fervent pain.
