Abstract

This article examines the moral judgments of high school adolescents regarding same-sex marriage, aiming to highlight the ethical positions of a social group whose views are often excluded from public debate. Based on a qualitative study using group discussions with students from public high schools in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, the authors analyze how adolescents construct moral evaluations concerning issues such as equality of rights, discrimination, the influence of religious beliefs on legislation, and adoption by same-sex couples. The study adopts a conception of moral judgment as a rational practice that requires reasons, arguments, and the ability to take the perspective of others. The findings show that most adolescents express a favorable stance toward the legal recognition of same-sex marriage, grounded in principles of equality, respect, and human rights, as well as a clear rejection of discrimination based on sexual orientation. Although some persistent prejudices remain—particularly regarding adoption—the analysis reveals a significant openness to sexual diversity and a critical view of religious interference in a secular state. The article concludes that adolescents demonstrate a strong reflective capacity for making informed moral judgments and that including their perspectives enriches ethical debate and supports the development of a more plural, tolerant, and democratic society.
