Abstract

The legal and illegal commercialization of wild animals is one of the most barbaric forms of trade at national and international level. While illegal activities have reduced the number of specimens to meager numbers or have driven entire species to extinction, the legal trade has been exhibited on numerous occasions for its lack of respect for the living beings with which it profits. In spite of this, trading with all types of wild animals has turned out to be the most profitable option for a portion of the population. This paper focuses on the situation of psittacidae, a word that refers to parakeets, parrots and macaws.

The trade and possession of psittacidae are activities characterized by a high level of cruelty. On the one hand, the trade of parakeets, parrots and macaws lacks any kind of respect for the living beings it trades with – killing 7 out of every 10 specimens taken from their habitat. The 3% of the individuals that are resilient enough to survive the plundering and transport, end up paying a life sentence in a small prison in absolute isolation. This work attempts to show the dark story behind every wild animal used as a pet, especially the cruel reality behind every caged parrot that we see everyday.
