Argumentative Limitations in Applied Ethics

Abstract

To understand and eventually resolve problems in applied ethics, we need to offer reasons that justify our decisions and positions; that is, we need to argue. However, argumentation processes face difficulties that exceed the possibility of completely resolving the problems at hand, since there are starting points that surpass the scope of the argumentative process, especially regarding axiological issues and the facts that frame the problem under discussion. We divide this article into three parts: first, we present the characteristics of applied ethics and its problems; second, we show how argumentation is a relevant approach to addressing these issues; third, we show that the argumentative process is beyond its capabilities
