Abstract

from the American and British armies. The young Kurt Vonnegut, who was a prisoner of the German, was a survivor of the attack. His primary intention had been to reflect the event into a novel, but it took him twenty four years to achieve it. When, in 1969, he published Slaughterhouse-Five, he had to overcome several narrative obstacles. One of these is going to be revised In this brief presentation, guided by the research of Dominique Maingueneau and Oswald Ducrot: the construction of the ethos in the first chapter of the novel.
