Abstract

This study attempts to compare how the word “meaning” has been defined by some authors, why there is a transformation in the meaning of words and what kind of relationship the evolution of words has regarding the belonging to a particular society, that is to say, how the changes of the words acquire a meaning according to a certain place and a historical moment. It is intended to underline how the linguistic sign should be analyzed as a social phenomenon, since it is in society where their meaning arise, remain and change, since the medium in which words change and transform is always a social medium. In this same tenor we mention the most representative positions of some authors who have studied the meaning, such as: Saussure, Baldinger, Ullman, Peirce, Szober, Bloomfield, Smirnitskii, Russell, etc.
