Abstract

The main objective of this essay is to take a tour through relevant authors of 20th century literature, who considered the inclusion in their works to a greater or lesser extent of the work or life of the Roman poet Virgil. The above, with the purpose of offering a global vision based on the Aeneid and the Georgics, and how these have been received and recreated in modern literature by authors such as Jorge Luis Borges and Alfonso Reyes. We will review some of the best-known sources of the contemporary literary world where passages, verses and ideas whose Virgilian influence has left an indelible and imperishable mark on both European and American literature of the 20th and 21st centuries are translated. Likewise, we will reflect on what it means for a work to be considered a “classic” and what is the relevance of this in the humanities, to the point of being able to speak of “Virgilianism”, through exemplifying works where Virgil and his legacy are are present explicitly or intertextually. It is concluded that Virgil continues to be an author whose work and figure are a reference, that is, a classic in the field of the humanities in general, and literature in particular, whose "disciples" found in the Poet a privileged interlocutor with whom They tried to understand themselves and their time.
