Void of Values and Utopia in The Death of Artemio Cruz and The Sleepwalkers.

The present analysis demonstrates the productive reception of Hermann Broch's novel The Sleepwalkers (Die Schlafwandler, 1930-1932) by Carlos Fuentes in his work The Death of Artemio Cruz (La muerte de Artemio Cruz, 1962). The Mexican writer made references to the Austrian writer's work on several occasions, and it is considered certain that he at least read Broch's two major novels, The Sleepwalkers and The Death of Virgil (Der Tod des Vergil, 1945). In his own novel, Fuentes adopted some central ideas from the plot of The Sleepwalkers, drawing inspiration from the theme of the void of values in the postwar era and incorporating various characteristics of the protagonist Wilhelm Huguenau to build the character of Artemio Cruz. Both novels end with allusions to utopias.
