This article discusses several aspects of the status of Hope Mirrlees and her masterpiece, Paris. A Poem (1919), within the canon of modernism. Written three years prior to The Waste Land (1922) and contemporaneous with the serial publication of Ulysses, Paris. A Poem constitutes one of the earliest examples of the mythic method in modern European literature. Accordingly, this article is devoted to an analysis of the poem’s mythic method, focusing on three fundamental archetypes: the Great Mother, the Virgin, and the descent into the underworld.
