Abstract

his article engages in a critical conversation with Peter Sloterdijk's reflections on modernity. The German philosopher is pro-modern in that he sees in the openness and globalization of the world the possibility for human beings to confirm their ability to forge themselves. However, forging oneself is insufficient to triumph within the existing or capitalist modernity, since material conditions are needed to allow for triumph. In that sense, this article demystifies the omnipotence of the self by pointing out its ideological component, so to speak. On the other hand, a hermeneutic and situated reading of the German philosopher's texts has been necessary for the critical conversation, and thus, it has been possible to account for the consequences of modernity that he does not take into account, since his Central European circumstance only allows him to observe the advantages of the modern project, but not the consequences.
