Courtesy and forms of address: second-person pronouns in Spanish and Portuguese
Keywords:
Pronominal system, Social power, Solidarity., Variation dialectal, Dative and accusative.Abstract
This study analyzes the differences in the current use of pronominal forms and pronominal systems in Spanish and Portuguese with the purpose of highlighting some variables that influence the choice of specific pronouns. First, I examine strategies of courtesy in conversation, using a survey of native speakers and sixteen Spanish and Portuguese-langue films to show that in similar situations people in Spain, Argentina and Brazil prefer the use of informal pronoun, whereas in Portugal and Mexico the formal pronoun is used. Second, I analyze significant changes of pronominal systems in order to contrast uses in Spanish and Portuguese and between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese to demonstrate that the pronominal system of Brazilian Portuguese is more complex, particularly regarding disagreements about the pronominal case and the position of the accusative and dative pronouns. Accordingly, I conclude that the uses of pronouns have changed and vary, despite the fact the countries utilize the same language and exist in close geographical proximity.Downloads
