The forgotten heroes of the History in “Darjeling”, by Ignacio Padilla

This article analyzes the short-story “Darjeling” in the Antipodes Stories (2001), from the perspective of the hero forgotten and betrayed by the official history in the context of the English expeditions in Tibet, and from the same concept of ‘antipode’ of the volume. The characterization of the humble protagonist contrasts with the arrogance of the Englishman who hires him for a mission. The story judges the universal history that records the traitor as a hero. Ignacio Padilla takes from Borges the topic of the traitor, but reversing the Borges’ model, Padilla achieves a tale where the true story prevails over the fiction.
