This paper looks at the passages in Freud’s work in which the founder of psychoanalysis quotes poems of Goethe, Schiller and Heine. It focuses on how Freud quotes the poets of German Romanticism and in the analysis of Freud’s interpretation of The Uncanny (1919) from Hoffman’s short story The Sandman (1817). The influences of German romanticism in the conception of Freudian unconscious, and some similarities and differences between romanticism and psychoanalysis are defined
