The role of languages in the idea of erudition and false erudition in El Gallo Pitagórico

This article analyzes the role of languages in the representation of the ideas of erudition and false erudition in El Gallo Pitagórico (1842–1844), a satirical work by Juan Bautista Morales. The study begins with the premise that, in the Enlightenment context, knowledge of classical and modern languages was a defining trait of the erudite, but also a potential source of intellectual vanity. The aim of this work is to examine how Morales simultaneously reproduces and critiques the linguistic practices associated with the figure of the enlightened intellectual. The analysis focuses on three dimensions: the use of foreign languages, the references to language learning, and commentary on translation. Through textual analysis, the article identifies fragments written in languages other than Spanish, references to classical and modern authors, as well as mentions of translation and of language learning. The article concludes on the one hand that El Gallo Pitagórico articulates the value of knowing languages, while criticizing its ostentation and, on the other hand, the abundant presence of texts written in various languages through the work can be described precisely as an example of ostentation.
