Abstract

This document examines different (im)politeness pragmatic-discursive strategies operating in Mexico
City during 1967 and 1970. We offer an interactional discursive analysis based on six interviews
involving 11 educated people: seven women and four men aged 25 to 59. The results indicate that
both women and men sampled, according to validated social patterns for feminine/masculine
behavior at the time, use direct with/without redress, indirect, and covert resources to negotiate
three features for social face: autonomy, affiliation, and impoliteness.
