On the coreference of the subject in Latin absolute constructions.
Keywords:
Coreferentiality, SN-Subject, Ablative absolute, Accusative absolute, Nominative absoluteAbstract
It is known that the Spanish language is the daughter of Latin. Therefore, it is essential sometimes to
go back to this mother tongue and its evolution to explain the current grammatical properties of our
language. It is in this sense that the present work is dedicated to the study of a much debated issue
in studies on absolute clauses in Spanish: this is the subject's coreference. The objective is to offer a
review of the different descriptions provided by grammarians regarding the subject's coreference of
Latin absolute constructions. This look at the Latin grammars allows us to verify that in the standard
Latin absolute constructions the subjects did not coincide with any element of the main sentence.
However, cases appeared in the evolution of the language in which the subject is related to an
element of the predicate of the main sentence.
