Sociocultural heterogeneity in the short story “Chac Mool” by Carlos Fuentes
Keywords:
Mexican Literature, Time, Space, MulticulturalismAbstract
This article presents an analysis of the configuration of time and space in the short story
“Chac Mool” by the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012), published in the volume of
short stories Los días enmascarados in 1954 by Los Presentes publishing house. The analysis
starts from the premise of how these elements represent socio-cultural universes in conflict, a phenomenon known as “sociocultural heterogeneity”, a concept studied by the Latin
American theorists Antonio Cornejo Polar (2003) and Néstor García Canclini (1990). In this
manner, it is studied how in “Chac Mool” the modern present and the pre-Hispanic past are
confronted, according to the relationships between time and space and their link with the
main characters.
