Ayotzinapa and intellectual engagement in Latin America

The article explores the role of the committed Latin American intellectual through the lens of Ayotzinapa (2014) as a contemporary symbol of the intersection between critical thought, politics, and ethics. Its objective is to examine how Latin American writers and intellectuals—from Gabriela Mistral to Mario Vargas Llosa—have historically expressed a commitment to justice, truth, and freedom in response to state oppression and structural violence. The methodology is mainly documentary and comparative, grounded in the critical analysis of bibliographic sources, essays, and testimonies from Latin American and European thinkers (Sartre, Rama, Gilman, Franco), reconstructing the evolution of the notion of intellectual engagement from the twentieth century to the present. The scope of the study lies in its interdisciplinary reflection linking literature, history, and politics, arguing that the intellectual remains essential in confronting social injustice. Through the Ayotzinapa case, Gallegos de Dios highlights the enduring ethical power of the written word and the urgent need to renew critical consciousness in today’s Latin American societies.Downloads
