The Work of Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction.
Keywords:
Originality, Authenticity, Artwork, ReproductionAbstract
Why an artwork shall be original? What does the authenticity mean in an artwork? Beginning
from these questions, I propose to present a dissertation about the original and the
authenticity in contemporary art, at the context of the technological advances, mainly through the revision of some postulates written by Walter Benjamin in his essay The Work of
Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. The main thesis of the study is that it is necessary
to distinguish between the mechanicals productions modes of the 20th century from other
digital ones of the 21st century. From the mechanical and the digital reproductions arise two
postulates, two rationalities and two different creation modes.
