Abstract

By studying the problem of memory reliability, an apparently contradictory conclusion is
reached, namely that memory is and is not a reliable source to justify many of our beliefs and
guide our behavior. How to avoid this apparent contradiction? To answer this question, I will
mainly attend to the most common and documented reasons that are exposed to show that
memory fails and to which one can leverage to legitimize our mistrust of memory. Later I will provide an argument to solve this apparent contradiction. This argument is based on a
distinction between memory as an object of epistemological interest, on the one hand, and
cognitive, on the other.
