Sahagún, an example of frustration: between enthusiasm and pessimism; or, On the philosophical sin of mistaking Anahuac for New Spain
Keywords:
Peccatillium, Bagatelle, Peccatum philosophicum, Doctrina of discovery, Pessimism, FrustrationAbstract
This text addresses several issues that invite reflection, such as the origin of the philosophical sin, or "pecadillo philosophical" (a little philosophical sin) that European states justified by dominating, conquering, or invading other states they considered inferior. It then presents the internal conflict experienced by Friar Bernardino de Sahagún as an example of frustration. Finally, it presents the Catholic Church's current rejection of the "Doctrine of Discovery" by siding with indigenous peoples, thereby opening a new space for reinterpreting more than five hundred years of the clash or confrontation between the New World (indigenous peoples of the West Indies) and the Old World or Europe.
