He/She in discourse: communicative strategies revisited

The main goal of this paper is to analyze the communicative strategies associated with the exploitation of the meaning of Deixis attributed to él /ella (he/she) in Spanish according to the Columbia School linguistics theoretical framework, which considers linguistic forms as signs with invariable meaning used by the speaker according to the speaker´s communicative needs. The result of the qualitative analysis yields important discrepancies between the description of the communicative strategies and the way these forms are used in natural discourse by speakers of the PRESEEA-Mexico City corpus, laying ground for the need to postulate a new meaning hypothesis for these forms within CS.
