This article offers a comparative analysis of femininity and power dynamics in Benito Pérez Galdós’s La de Bringas and María Luisa Bombal’s La amortajada. Through a critical approach, it examines the protagonists’ strategies of resistance and submission within the constraints of patriarchal systems in their respective historical and cultural contexts. The study underscores how both authors portray marriage as a site of oppression, with the protagonists’ responses diverging in ways that reflect the sociocultural specificities of 19th-century Spain and early 20th-century Chile.
