Abstract

Setting up the narrative space is essential for constructing any type of story. A properly detailed space not only helps situate the plot in a specific time and place but also provides a unique symbolism that allows us to understand the characters, their objectives in each scene, and the emotional growth they experience. In the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the area surrounding the three billboards changes through specific sequences. Each sequence indicates a shift in the script's stages: observing the changes in the billboards provides us with information about the transformations in the characters' personalities and their moral positioning. This approach organically integrates the narrative space with the protagonist's dramatic arc. Using the theoretical concepts of screenwriter John Truby, as well as Luz Aurora Pimentel's arguments for analyzing space, we examine these changes in the billboards to directly relate them to specific moments in the film. In this way, we explore how these modifications translate into symbols that offer a more detailed understanding of the protagonists' emotional transformation.
