Beyond the barricades: the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico (FECSM) and the transformation of its forms of communication, social and political participation.

Abstract

This article analyzes the evolution of the communication and participation methods of the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico (FECSM) over time. It explores how the organization has moved from traditional forms of communication to the adoption of digital tools, with the aim of expanding its reach and promoting social and political activism. The study is based on the theory of New Social Movements and uses documentary content analysis and digital ethnography as methodology. The results show that, in various historical contexts, the FECSM has used both traditional media and digital social networks to promote social and political participation, denounce acts of repression by the Mexican state and maintain links with rural communities. In addition, there is evidence of a strategic and intensive use of memes as a communication tool, which has allowed the organization to develop a distinctive visual language and strengthen its identity. This new language, with its specific codes and meanings, has become a key element to effectively transmit its messages.
