Earthquakes and pirates in the viceroyal literature: the leaflets sixteenth century

Abstract

The article recovers the testimony of two appreciated leaflets sixteenth century published in the viceroys of New Spain and Peru recounting the news of the earthquake that struck Guatemala in 1541, where the second woman Alvarado died, and capturing the English pirate Richard Hawkins by Lima fleet led by Beltran de Castro. The leaflets describe, embedded in the tradition of Indian historiography, became documentary source of a series of literary rewrites over the viceroyalty centuries related processes fictionalization of the Chronicle of Indies and epic poetry, from the Arauco Domado of Pedro de Oña to La batalla naval peruntina.
