New Alternative Masculinities in the Prose of Mayra Santos Febres: Paradigms from the Periphery
Keywords:
Masculinities, Hegemonic Masculinity, Masculinities Afro-Descendants, Mayra Santos Febres, African-Descendant Characters, Alternate MasculinitiesAbstract
The following article examines some of the afro-descendant characters portrayed in Mayra Santos Febres’ narratives derived from a theoretical frame based on the Men Studies. The objective of this study is to identify alternative expressions of masculinities in contraposition to the imposition of the hegemonic masculinity and its compulsory invisibility forced upon the marginalized subjectivities, such as afro-descendants or queers. The characters examined are Demetrio from Nuestra Señora de la Noche (2006), the drug dealers Chino Pereira and Tadeo from Cualquier miércoles soy tuya (2002), Lucas, the gardener of the short story “Resinas para Aurelia” (1996), and el Sirenito, the protagonist of Sirena Selena vestida de pena (2000). Their characterizations are studied to identify any manifestation that could be considered as a positive alternative to experience their masculinities away from power or domination.Downloads
