THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AS AN ANTIDOTE TO CORRUPTION, IMPUNITY, AND POOR PERFORMANCE BY THE DOMINANT POLITICAL CLASS

This article reflects on the importance of education as the foundation of civility and as an antidote to corruption, impunity, and the poor performance of the dominant political class in Mexico. From a philosophical and political perspective, the author argues that the crisis of Mexican democracy cannot be explained solely by institutional failures, but rather by the absence of solid civic education aimed at the conscious understanding and exercise of citizens’ rights and obligations. The study contends that civic education, combined with ethical and philosophical training, is essential for building a citizenry capable of actively participating in public affairs, monitoring political authorities, and demanding accountability. Drawing on classical and contemporary thinkers—such as Aristotle, Plato, Machiavelli, Rawls, Habermas, Savater, and Freire—the article examines key concepts including democracy, power, civility, civil disobedience, and the rule of law. It also analyzes the role of educational institutions and the state in shaping a mature political culture, criticizing the systematic neglect of the humanities and ethics in educational curricula. The article concludes that only through comprehensive philosophical and political education, oriented toward critical thinking and moral awareness, can the degradation of public life be reversed and a substantive democracy grounded in the common good be strengthened.Downloads
