Abstract

Climate fiction is a subgenre of science fiction characterised by exposing imaginary scenarios that narrate contingent climate futures. Climate fiction and other forms of fiction are used to teach and learn about climate change. These proposals are based on transforming climate fiction into formal models. Usually, the transformation is intuitive, by trial and error. Here, I present a theoretical analysis to argue that transforming climate fiction into a school scientific model is a controlled mental activity with structure and functional characteristics. I provide theoretical elements to systematize the transformation of climate fiction into a scientific school model as a mental activity and transcend the intuitive explanation. The proposal is based on considering the transformation of climate fiction as a mental activity that modifies a narrative model into a formal climate change model through thought experimentation. Finally, I highlight some difficulties inherent in the transformation of climate fiction.
